Sometimes we just NEED God. It isn’t so much a question of whether there is one or not. Nor how much evidence or proof we can collect for or against in order to convince our rational mind of such a thing. Nor how we were raised. Or what we even believe. Life can be tricky. Unpredictable. Sometimes we are thrown curve balls. It’s an exercise in the unexpected. Even when we think we’ve got it made something can come out of left field and blindside us. Humankind invented the idea of Gods and Goddesses out of a profound need. A desperate need. A need for order, security, safety, guidance, assurance. The best Gods provide a sense of order and predictability to an entirely chaotic and unpredictable world.
A few weeks ago a friend of ours from high school passed away from a random case of cancer that he had battled for over a year. Out of the blue. He was too young to get cancer and too young to die. Not even 40 yet. It was a random act of brutal unfairness. A perfect example of quantum chaos theory at play. Not predicted, unexpected, irrational, unfair, heartless, unjustified. A similar thing happened to Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys last month. This friend of ours had become religious over the last ten years we discovered. I saw him speak in public just weeks before his death. One can only imagine the roller coaster of thoughts and emotions the heart and mind rides when confronting such a journey. No choice. No power. No rules. Just nature taking its course on a whim.
